"The Real Berlin"

On My first day in Germany I chose the "Real Berlin" tour. This was to explore the areas that are yet to be “fixed” since the wall came down, the street art community, and the alternative living houses. It was a very educational 6 hours on what’s “behind closed doors”. With the communist east being very dull, ordinary, and monotone feeling; it was very interesting to see the contrast between East and West Berlin. East Berlin buildings are mainly beige or grey with no unique details, while the West was able to keep up with the growth of wealth and work. I also passed some of what was the death strip, but now is a nature park with playgrounds.

We explored the multicultural districts and local farmer's markets selling handmade goods from scarves to flowers and the famous German sausages! I checked out the community living areas. They are not quite squatters, as they have an agreement with the local council and pay a fee. However they do live among themselves in a semi-nomadic lifestyle within the abandoned buildings from the cold war.

Throughout this tour we were able to see the works of famous street artists. Some were even paid for their work! Various streets were covered in colour and art, which I loved, while others are rather boring, covered mainly in tagging with no artistic value. I Finished up the tour at an underground bar in an abandoned warehouse!

6 hours,  2 train rides, 18,000 steps!

In what used to be the "Death Zone", you can now find families playing on the playground features!

One of the many plaques throughout Berlin bearing the names of victims of the war.
